Before this record came along I only bought Greatest Hits and Beatle albums. Some guy gave my sister this record for Christmas. I don't think she ever listened to it. I had heard of Jimi but they never played him on the radio. I took the record over to my buddies house and we listened to it. We really loved it. It was intertaining and humorous. I started buying albums and I never stopped. Jimi Hendrix changed my life forever. I went to my first concert to see him. He could play those songs live!
"Hendrix was the first musician in rock music who both strived for absolute freedom and was, I'd say, objectively qualified for that freedom." No, he wasn't. He was the first who succeeded. Before him the Indo-Dutch band the Tielman Brothers tried. This video is from 1960:

As The Netherlands weren't ripe (unlike England in 1966) the band got panned and went touring in Germany.
I think that if Jimi had lived past 27 he would have made a record with Bob Dylan. They had a mutual respect for one another and liked working with different musicians. I bet it would have sounded great
On that note: I've never understood why some people see "The Wind Cries Mary" as a Dylan rip-off. Apart from a vaguely (but only vaguely) similar approach to the words, the song sounds nothing like Dylan to me. What am I missing?
